When are dental implants a good option?

Dental implants offer significant advantages over conventional tooth replacement in three main situations.

• Some missing teeth can be replaced without sacrificing healthy tooth structure. A conventional bridge requires the teeth on either side of the gap to be reduced, and even an inlay-retained bridge requires small cavities to be prepared.

• Where a removable denture would otherwise be the only way to replace all the missing teeth, implants may allow a fixed restoration instead. After an implant has been placed in the bone, the dental restoration is fitted following a healing period.

• When all teeth are missing, one or more implants can be an excellent way to stabilise a removable denture and greatly improve comfort.

Implants can be considered at any age, whether one, several or all teeth are missing. A beneficial additional effect observed in practice is that the jawbone tends to shrink less after a titanium implant has been placed.
