When should a missing tooth be replaced?
Ideally, a missing tooth should be replaced while it is still the only gap. Once the dental arch is no longer continuous, neighbouring teeth may tilt into the space, usually with the tooth behind the gap moving forwards. Teeth opposite the gap may also grow further out as they seek contact with a partner tooth. These changes can lead to increasing problems:
• A tilted tooth receives forces that are not aligned with its long axis. This places abnormal stress on the supporting tissues and may eventually lead to tooth loss.
• A tooth that grows further out becomes less well supported by bone, which may also lead to tooth loss over time.
Both consequences of a missing tooth also cause the upper and lower teeth to meet incorrectly. It is therefore advisable to have the missing tooth replaced within six to twelve months of extraction.
